A member of the British Foreign Service from to , le Carré is well-positioned to infuse the thrilling story with the gravitas necessary to set it apart from your dime-a-dozen drugstore pulp fiction. A solid addition to his oeuvre, Our Kind of Traitor does not disappoint, and readers should be prepared for one heck of a ride.   Now, turn le Carré creates mostly more youthfulprotagonists, like the brilliant, idealistic, naive amateur spy Perry Makepiecein his twenty-second novel, Our Kind of Traitor. Perry—and he’s always, fondly, Perry, more like ason than a hero—is likable enough, but there’s something unformed about him.

Our Kind of Traitor by John le Carré is a novel about a Russian money-launderer (Dima) who seeks the help of a friendly British couple (Perry and Gail) when they meet on the island of Antigua. Dima's need: to reach British intelligence and defect, not from the USSR, but from the Russian mafia he is fatally associated with/5.

Our Kind Of Traitor probably sells itself on John Le Carre’s reputation rather than on any synopsis of the novel itself. But this is a long, long way from Smiley’s People.

In very broad terms, this is a story of an English academic and his lawyer wife, on holiday in the Caribbean, meeting a Russian oligarch who wants to defect to the UK/5(). Our Kind Of Traitor is my kind of book. A look into the present day state of affairs in the spy trade through the thoughts of those guilty and not.

Per usual, Le Carre spins an intoxicating tale without getting drunk on his own prose. It is always a pleasure to read the words of one so comfortable with the English language/5(). Le Carré uses still another aspect of international relations in the new world order—the powerful, equivocal position of money launderers to the Russian mob—to put a new spin on a favorite theme: the betrayal that inevitably follows from sharply divided loyalties.

“Part vintage John le Carré and part Alfred Hitchcock the suspense in Our Kind of Traitor is genuine and nerve-racking.”—Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times “I would suggest immortality for John le Carré, who I believe one of the most intelligent and entertaining writers working today.”—The Chicago : Penguin Publishing Group.

I was an avid fan of Mr Le Carre till a few years ago when I stopped feeling the words as I once had. Still, every few years I walk into a book store to find he has written a couple more novels and can't help picking one up.
